NEW GAME OLD IDEA!

So stepping once again from the role of an artist and into a game dev. I decided based on another up and coming project to learn first hand, ins and outs of the hit classic "TETRIS". On this project I’m doing all the art and will “try” to accomplish as much code work as possible. That being said there are many forums and guides out there to help so it's not so big a problem.

As I initially started figuring out what platform I wanted to try this on I first thought of Unity 3D however another game creation engine came to mind, Construct 2. For now I will be using the free version but the limitations for such are not that great so it is a great way to devel into development and possibly having something to show without too much overhead cost. Once the idea and the engine were established I decided to try and emulate other Tetris design choices while trying to maintain my own unique style. All the background work is subject to multiple changes but for now it works.

I used Illustrator for the Tetris blocks, Photoshop for the background and play borders, After Effects for music conversion, and finally Maya for the background rendering. Sound effects were an easy solution thanks in part to https://www.bfxr.net/. There you can make absolutely free sfx files and export them with .wav files which many engines love using. Another invaluable source is https://freesound.org/ which has even more sound files and music loops for free. On there I found a great artist by the name of “frankum” and will be using his loop below for the initial play and possibly more from him in the future. Checkout his song!

So ultimately what's the point of this endeavour apart from learning stuff...

  • Make something fun
  • Use this to cement my understanding for future project layouts
  • Hang it up for retail once its done so others can enjoy a finished project
  • Move on….

With those points down there are still additions and changes to make, Title screen, game over screen, game start sequence, etc., etc. All this should be well within my means to accomplish quick enough then I can start the journey into my next and largest project.

Wish me luck!
